Betting on a five cards combination : this is the principle of poker. This game is now universal and has many variants : draw poker, stud poker, poker hold'em... There are one for any taste. Poker is played in clubs. But since several years it is done above all on internet or at home with friends.

Basis of poker

All poker variants have common principles. Poker is a card game whose aim is to have the better combination with five cards from those the player can use. Every player bets on his hand, but he don't have to show the hand at the end of the game, if all opponents passed. It is the main point of poker because it allows player to bet (and maybe to win) also if they don't have good cards.

Poker variants

Differences between poker variants rest on the way cards are dealt. Open cards are visible by anyone. Hidden cards are only visible by the player they belong to. Common cards can be use by any player instead of private cards who can only be played by their holder.
The mos traditionnal poker game is the draw poker where any player receives five closed private cards. At stud poker (five or seven cards), all cards are private, but four of them are open.
At the other side, some cards are common at hold'em poker. The two main hold'em poker games are Omaha and above all the famous Texas hold'em which supplanted the draw poker. It is the most played poker game on internet and that which benefits from the largest media coverage.
Casinos propose games coming from poker like pai gow poker and carribean stud poker. They also offer the possibility to play video poker, a video game like slots machines, whose aim is to obtain winning poker combinations.
