The Baccarat (or baccara, railroad): rules of the game

Baccarat is a very traditional gambling. It is also very simple, even if the rules of distribution of the third card are a little more complex. It is a game of pure chance, where the player does not have any possibility of action. It is for this reason an excellent probabilities game.

The principle of the Baccarat

The Baccarat (or baccara) is a card game which is played in the casinos with several (6 or 8 in general) sets of 52 cards gathered in a shoe. The goal of the game of Baccarat is to obtain the hand whose value is nearest possible to 9. The numbered cards from 1 to 9 are worth the number indicated. The 10 and the figures (jacks, queens and kings) are worth 0. The value of a hand is calculated by adding the value with the cards and by cutting off 10 as much from time than necessary to obtain a figure, between 0 and 9. Another way of calculating the value of a hand is to add the value with each card and to retain only the last figure (units) of this number. A hand being worth 8 or 9 is called a natural.
Even if several players can simultaneously dispute a part with the same table, each one only plays against the casino represented by the croupier.
One of the most famous alternatives of the baccara is the railroad, whose principal specificity is the fact that the roles of player and banker are reversed in turn.

Course of part of Baccarat

To begin the part, the player deposits a setting or several settings on the table of play either on his hand, or on that of the bank, or on the null part. Then two cards are distributed to one with the player then at the bank.
If the player and/or the croupier obtained a natural, the part stops. One carries out the payment of the settings then.
If neither the player nor the casino has a natural, it is proceeded to a distribution of the cards which follows very precise rules (no choice is left to the player). The player draws a card if and only if his hand is worth 5 or less. If the player stands, without drawing from the cards (thus with a hand being worth 6 or 7), and if the hand of the casino is lower or equal to 5, the croupier draws a card. If the player drew a card, the casino obtains a third card in the following cases (and only those):

  • its hand is lower or equal to 2
  • its hand is worth 3 and the third card of the player is not a 8
  • its hand is worth 4 and the third card of the player is not worth 0,1,8 or 9
  • its hand is worth 5 and the third card of the player is worth 4,5,6 or 7
  • its hand is worth 6 and the third card of the player is a 6 or a 7

In the other cases (if that hand is worth 7) the bank does not receive a third card.
The hands are evaluated again. The bets are paid.

Payment of the settings

If the player has a hand higher than that of the bank and that he bet above, he gains the equivalent of his setting. If the bank with a hand higher than that of the player, and that the player put above, it wins the equivalent of its setting deduction made of a commission of 5%, called vigorish, that the casino is allocated. Finally if he bet on a null part and that its hand is equivalent to that of the croupier, he obtains 8 times his stake. In the all other cases the players do not gain anything and lose their stake.
